WRs coach Prince to serve as Lions’ head coach temporarily

COVID-19 protocols will keep interim head coach Darrell Bevell away from the Detroit Lions on Saturday.The Lions are promoting Robert Prince to the head-coaching role for the Week 16 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Sean Ryan, the Lions’ quarterbacks coach, will take over for Prince as the primary offensive playcaller in the game.The Lions have been short on the coaching staff since the firing of Matt Patricia on Nov. 28. Bevell was promoted from offensive coordinator to interim head coach, and on Monday the team fired special teams coordinator Brayden Coombs.Prince, hired by Jim Caldwell to join the Lions in 2014, has never been a head coach; Ryan has never been a playcaller.Bevell said on Monday he was at risk of missing the game along with multiple coaches due to COVID-19 tracing. He pointed to the team’s recent travel to Nashville to play the Titans. The area is exploding with new positive cases.
